Pharmacy Technicians are skilled healthcare professionals who have been trained in the history of pharmacy, law, ethics, regulations, communication, calculations, drug information, practice settings, over-the-counter drugs (OTC’s) and alternative medicine.
Pharmacy technicians work in a variety of locations, but can also work for long-term care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturers, third-party insurance companies, computer software companies, or in government or teaching. Job duties include dispensing prescription drugs and other medical devices to patients and instructing on their use. They may also perform administrative duties in pharmaceutical practice, such as reviewing prescription requests with doctor's offices and insurance companies to ensure correct medications are provided and payment is received.
The Pharmacy Technician training program consists of 72 hours of classroom instruction and 30 hours of hands-on, non-paid externship in a pharmaceutical facility. Externships are scheduled for a two week period during the latter part of the class. Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from various externships sites which can be located within a 50 mile radius of Kishwaukee College. Drug testing and a criminal background check may be required for externship placement.
Because of inherent requirements of the profession the following minimum abilities are expected of each student: at least a 10th grade Math and English (speaking and reading) level; psychomotor skills (eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity) and visual acuity (normal or corrected) sufficient for safe and successful practice of Pharmacy Technician duties.
The Pharmacy Technician training program is a noncredit training program. Federal and State financial aid do not apply to noncredit training programs, however, WIOA funding is available for the Pharmacy Technician program to those who qualify. In addition, Kishwaukee College offers a payment plan option. The cost of the class is $1,200.
